Is printing the answer to housing problems?

Is printing the answer? Probably not. An article in today’s Guardian highlights some exciting-looking houses that are to be entirely 3D printed in concrete.

The homes will look great but, as pavilions in the landscape, they are scarcely revolutionary once one discounts their form. The main advantage, it seems, is that they will use less concrete than conventional construction, which is environmentally good, and they will circumvent the Dutch shortage of bricklayers.

Let’s enjoy the visuals and doubtless the finished result, and remember that housing will be made better not by some single innovation but by lots of new techniques and approaches. Although these houses may have a small, and visually appealing, part to play.
