Passport to education

Phin Harper, of the Architecture Foundation, has sparked a lively discussion on Facebook because he has been asked to crit at an architecture school, and the bureaucrats have demanded that he produce a passport before he can participate

Apparently this is at the behest of the UK Borders Agency. Phin says that he has lectured at several other architecture schools without receiving this demand, although others on Facebook say it is commonplace.

Last year, a philosopher’s lecture at the University of Hertfordshire was cancelled after he refused to produce his passport. And, as somebody pointed out, we are not legally obliged to HAVE passports. I know several people who do not.

So, is this simply a sensible check, or is it an unwarrantable level of intrusion? It certainly feels as if the concept of architecture without borders is dead in the water.
