Benefits of Natural Light and Ventilation

“Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” World Health Organisation

Do you ever think about how much time you spend indoors each day? If you were to calculate the number of hours you spend inside, per day, would it surprise you? What if you then worked out an average week, then calculated that figure to work out a year? Yes, it wouldn’t be exact but it would probably surprise you.

As human beings we spend the majority of our time indoors often deprived from the two elements, natural light and ventilation, which we can obtain for free, for no other reason than the busy schedule of our daily lives.

So when designing a new home or extending an existing building whose responsibility is it to make sure these amenities are included? Recent research carried out by research agency Cadvantage highlights that not all architects take Health and Wellbeing into account when designing a building, in fact the research uncovered that only 59% of the architects working on designing education buildings, 57% in healthcare, 48% in office spaces, 44% in retail and most worrying of all 35% in residential consider health and wellbeing.

There is a growing body of evidence to suggest that buildings enjoying high levels of natural light are literally more successful than those more reliant on artificial light. In all environments the eye and brain functions respond better to natural light, so people perform better.

In any building rooflights are often one of the first things to be omitted from the materials specification. There are many reasons that may lead to this decision but when skylights have been proven to provide up to three times more natural light into a building than vertical window we believe rooflights should be considered one of the most important elements.
