When a tower is a symbol

Today The Guardian devotes several pages, including the front, to the tower at St George’s Wharf in London. It talks about how much of it is empty, how expensive it is, and how much of it is owned by non-resident foreigners.

Somehow this story just wouldn’t work if the building was anything but a tower. They are just such perfect symbols of … well, everything. When Centre Point was first built, and stood empty for a long time, it was treated as a system then of the iniquities of the property market and the lack of affordable housing in the centre of the capital. That was more than 40 years ago and the stigma has never quite left it. 

And, of course, while so much has changed, in other ways so little has. This time it is a residential tower rather than an office building that is being attacked, but we are still worrying, and worrying even more, about housing prices. Plus ca change…
