Cutting through confusion about open plan

Nigel Oseland, a workplace expert, has posted a really good piece on his blog about the recent newspaper reports which say that open plan offices are universally bad. He is not, as he says, an apologist for open plan in every circumstance, but he was dubious about the research reported and decided to delve in further.

Not surprisingly, while the original research was not perfect, it was the reporting that was really at fault. A whole range of issues were not considered and the straightforward conclusion of ‘open plan is always bad’ just could not be justified. Oseland also talks about the importance of telling the difference between density of desks and density of occupation. For anybody designing office space, this should help introduce a healthy dose of scepticism.
