Glossary of terms
Actuators - are the mechanisms used to open and close the rooflights electronically whether they are out of reach or within reach
Added Security Rooflight - is a Rooflight that has added features on such as anti-bandit glass and bars on to enable it to be less vulnerable in being vandalised
Baseplate - this is the part of the rooflight that contains the hinges for the casement to be bolted onto. The baseplate sits between the structural support members when installed and isnt viewable when fitted.
Bespoke Rooflights- is employed in a variety of applications to mean an item custom made to the buyer's specification, in this case rooflights that are made to an exact set of requirements from the customer. the Rooflight Company also refers to this type of rooflight as a Special Rooflight.
Capping piece - This is the "hat" that is attached to the top of the pyramid rooflight and can also be found on bespoke lantern rooflights
Casement - This is the part of the rooflight that contains the glass and is bolted onto the baseplate. The casement is viewable once fitted in the roof
Cill - Bottom section of the Rooflight
Cill Mounted Motor is the elctronic opening/closing mechnaism that fits on the bottom section of the rooflight

Coma - is the fabric used in our blind material to give a greater degree of light control and privacy but doesn’t offer complete blackout
Condensation - is the change of the physical state of aggregation (or simply state) of matter from gaseous phase into liquid phase.
Conservation area - is a tract of land that has been awarded protected status in order to ensure that natural features, cultural heritage or biota are safeguarded
Conservation Rooflight - As above but a faithful replica to the traditional Victorian Rooflight manufactured in the 1800s
Daylighting - is the practice of placing windows, or other transparent media, and reflective surfaces so that, during the day, natural light provides effective internal illumination.
Escape Rooflights - are rooflights that are hinged on the side and are fitted with gas struts so the Rooflight stays open on its own accord. Escape rooflights meet B1 means of escape
Flat Roof - is a type of covering of a building. In contrast to the sloped form of a roof, a flat roof is horizontal or nearly horizontal. Foot plate
Fortecom - is a specially developed, pultruded fibre reinforced composite which is designed to withstand the most hostile of environments.
Gas Struts- are pressurised cylinders that are attached to the rooflights so that they can remain open unaided
Hand Winder- is the mechanism used to open and close the rooflights when the rooflights are within reach.
Head Detail- is the top section of the rooflight
Jamb Detail-are the side sections of the rooflight
Jamb Mounted Motor- is the motor fitted to the side of the rooflight
Lantern Rooflight- is a flat roof product and takes the shape of a large rectangular unit with pitched glazing. Modular lanterns can also be specified.
Linking bars-are the bars used to link banks of rooflights together so that they are in continuous runs, often referred to as Studio-Linked.
Listed building-is a building or other structure officially designated as being of a special architectural, historical or cultural significance.
Natural Plains-is the fabric used in our blind material to prevent glare while softening the light from overhead and produce a wonderfully diffused light
neo® rooflight-is a pitched frameless rooflight product made from a pultruded fibre reinforced composite called Fortecom®,
neo®-Steel rooflight-is a pitched frameless rooflight product made from steel
Non-Standard Rooflight-is a rooflight from our standard range that has a slight variation from others i.e. a different colour or a different glazing spec
Overall Sizing-the maximum width and length of the baseplate
Pitched Roof- is a roof structure where the roof is set at a slant-see Products by Roof Type
Plateau Rooflight- is a flat roof product and takes the shape of a square or rectangle depending on size. Plateaus start at only 95mm above the kerb height.
Pole Winder-is the mechanism used to open and close the rooflights when the rooflights are out of reach.
Poly-edged Rooflight- is a flat roof product that has more than 4 sides e.g. a hexagonal or octagonal shaped rooflights with pitched glazing.
Pultrusion- is a continuous process of manufacturing composite materials with constant cross-section whereby reinforced fibres are pulled through a resin, possibly followed by a seperate performing system and into a heated die, where the resin undergoes polymerization.
Pyramid Rooflight-is a flat roof product where that is manufactured to resemble a pyramid shape with pitched glazing.
Rene Detail- is used when a Conservation Rooflight is installed onto a roof where the pitch is less than the recommended 17.5 degrees.
Replica Rooflight-is a pitched roof product that is traditional on the outside yet modern on the inside with the oprion of a modern blind system and gas struts.
Roof Window- is an architectural term for the frameset with glass which is fitted to an opening in the roof to admit daylight.
Rooflight- is another way of describing the frameset with glass in thats fitted to an opening in the roof to admit daylight
Self-Cleaning Glass- is a specific type of glass with an enzyme layer that keeps itself free of dirt and grime through natural processes.
Skylight-is another word to describe the frameset with glass in that's fitted to an opening in the roof to admit daylight.
Special Rooflight-is a rooflight that is specifically designed according to the customers exact specification (same as a bespoke rooflight)
Studio Designer-are rooflights that are linked together on specially fabricated baseplates to achieve a continuous run of rooflights.
Studio Linked-are rooflights that are linked together with linking bars to achieve a continuous run of rooflights.
Thermoliner®- is a thermally decoupled lining made from PVCU that ensures no condensation problems occur by isolating the cold bridge at the Rooflight frame resulting in warm-to-the-touch internal surfaces.
Type A Linking- is used for special rooflights where 2 base plates are shaped along their joining edges so that they can interlock. This linking method is useful when the Rooflight required is too big to fit on one baseplate. Also useful to link SDRs together to create banks of rooflights.
U-Value- often called the overall heat transfer coefficient and describes how well a building element conducts heat.
Viewable Sizing-is the unobstructed viewable area most notable the area of glass inside looking out.

Winding Crank-is used with the pole winder to open and close the rooflights when the rooflights are out of reach.
