The awful things seem to keep on happening, and the Mexican earthquake is just the latest.

How is it that, even with earthquake codes and drills, people keep dying? It was ironic that this happened during an earthquake drill on the 32nd anniversary of the massive quake that killed 10,000 people.

Although the final figures are not yet in, the deaths in this case are far fewer. Why? Well, a smaller quake and probably better codes. But with a serious quake some will always die, and some buildings will collapse, however well built.

Mexico City has the horrible double whammy of being earthquake prone and having a geology that means the ground is prone to liquefy. When the Europeans founded their city there, they could have chosen better.
