A burning need for city planning

Dezeen has republished Marcus Fairs’ interview with Burning Man founder Larry Harvey in recognition of his death at 70. Fairs’ interview, carried out in 2015, talks about the need for urban planning because, at the size of Burning Man – some 70,000 people – it is a city. Of course it is a pretty simple one – a smallish size, temporary and with a pretty coherent set of inhabitants. But it tackled, for instance, transport in an intelligent way, banning cars and putting everybody on bicycles.

We seem to need new solutions for our cities all the time, and although this top-down dictatorial approach would not work for a ‘real city’, we should probably extend the places where we look for solutions.
